This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by individuals working in a range of performing arts environments that involve children. It addresses the application of knowledge of regulations, industry guidelines and organisational procedures relevant to working with children. It also addresses assessing risks and monitoring children in a performing arts environment.

This unit applies to all individuals working in various roles in performing arts environments where children are involved including, but not limited to, crew, technicians and those in supervisory positions.

Individuals may be working independently or as part of a team. They are required to use some discretion and responsibility while working with children in a performing arts environment.

Typical age groups for children are 0 to 4 years, 5 to 10 years, 11 to 14 years and 15 to 18 years.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. Observe and monitor children during program activities to identify emerging issues or problems 
Take action, according to organisational policies and procedures and within area of own responsibility, to ensure positive program outcomes 
Use appropriate language and tone when communicating information to children of different age groups 
Ensure all interactions with children are respectful and observe professional, ethical and community accepted boundaries 
Respond, where appropriate, or report to a supervisor, instances of inappropriate interaction between children or between children and adults 
Respond appropriately to children who report any inappropriate interaction between children or between children and adults
